Forest fires are a major threat in many
parts of the world. They generally start
from an extreme long dry period and
are often started by lightning or other
natural causes. Another big threat are
careless humans, throwing away ciga-
rettes or lighting fires on purpose, also
fires used to clear forests which then
get out of control. An additional factor
involving the threat of a fire is strong
winds. Once the fire is burning and fire
fighters are on the ground, they are
often found helpless. Then huge areas
are in danger and could be destroyed.
Here is the point where the fire fighting
from the air with helicopters has its
special application, to extinguish the
fires punctually at certain hot spots,
to avoid further spreading.
This advantage is most important in
mountainous areas with special Heli-
copters like the Fire Fighting Team 4000,
to help avoiding catastrophic wildfires.
The Global Fire Monitoring System via
satellite, is assisting the world- wide
surveillance of wildfires and reporting
them to the national fire departments. |

The Fire Fighting Team 4000 can be based on any ”hot spot” worldwide. Fire Fighting Teams are usually
based in certain areas during the fire season to fight any fire in the earliest stage possible.
This can help to avoid major catastrophic fire disasters.
